ToRoots platform makes it possible for enterprising people in villages to collaborate with curated panel of travel bloggers, travel experts and photographers to co-create and market Experiential Travel packages.

Problem statement

While experiential travel is exciting, but is not yet very popular primarily due to lack of experiential travel offerings. They are very few options globally. ToRoots want to change that.

Imagine an enterprising person in a village in Chhattisgarh. His village is picturesque, and rich in culture and tradition. And can be a great holiday package. Yet, this villager will not be able to create that product and market it because he just does not have all the skills required to do it.

ToRoots want to change that.

Solution

ToRoots makes it possible for such villagers to create and market experiences on the platform by collaborating with experts who can make it happen. The villager and their panel of curated travel bloggers, travel marketing experts and photographers can co-create experiential travel products on our platform.

These curated experiential travel options will be marketed by ToRoots along with channel/marketing partners like MMT, OYO, AirBnB etc.

A win-win for all stakeholders.

Ramratan has abandoned ‘Havelis’ in his village. It is rich in culture & heritage. There is potential to create a ‘rural’ experience; but Ramratan does not have the know-how and the means to make it happen.

On ToRoots, RamRatan collaborates with Prachi, a travel blogger who has the ability to conceptualize a travel experience. She also understands the travel domain, and has the experience of marketing travel properties, including sharing it on her popular travel blog.

On the ToRoots platform, Ramratan and Prachi can also pull in partners like Grassroots, a travel operator specializing on experiential travel who can provide backend support.

Thus, as a result, the three are able to create a travel experience and market it.

ToRoots uses their web platform to test their ‘Experiential Travel Options' thus created by collaboration between a villager + a travel blogger/specialist + travel operator.

The data and market feedback from these test help them refine products and market these appropriately to OTAs and travel agents.

Business model and unit economics

  • ToRoots carefully curates travel experts who will collaborate with villagers. These experts are on-boarded free.
  • These travel experts identify destinations, where the expert and ToRoots jointly find an appropriate local entrepreneur.
  • They co-create products, price it and make it ‘market-ready’
  • ToRoots charge 25% Commission per booking
  • To other collaborators partners (like Travel Vendors, Bloggers, Photographers), ToRoots pays around 10-15% of their commission per booking on the products they are involved in.

Unit economics

  • Currently it costs ToRoots roughly Rs.5700 (one time) to put together a travel experience (as it is done offline)
  • With the tech platform, they expect the cost of product creation to come down to Rs.2700
  • Average ticket size of an experiential travel booking (usually a group of 6-10 individuals) is Rs.20,000
  • ToRoots margin is Rs.5,000, of which Rs.500 – Rs.750 goes to travel experts who have collaborated on that product
  • Additionally, 40-50% of net commission will need to be shared with OTAs and channel partners.
  • Nett: ToRoots will make between Rs.1500 - Rs.2000 per booking.

Current status and traction

  • 60 Verified Experiences created
  • Total Sales (GMV) of Rs. 20+ Lacs

  • Created Community of 30+ bloggers, & 65+ Travel Vendors

To test whether this model of collaboration between a village level entrepreneur and travel experts works, ToRoots tried the concept in an offline manner. Results were encouraging.

They now want to take the model to a pilot scale, and test the processes that will enable them to scale. In parallel, they also begin work on our tech platform where the collaborative tools will help automate several processes which are currently offline.

Social impact over Villagers & Community Partners

(real life experiences happened in Two Villages of Maharashtra)

Alternative Employment & Income: Alternative employment for natives. Average 25% growth in income.

Impact on Livelihood of the Natives: Villagers started educating girl child. Wedding age of girl increased by 2-3 yrs.

Preservation of Cultures & Handicrafts: Natives see value in local cultures. Exposure to native handicrafts.

Funding needs and growth plans

ToRoots is raising a seed round to achieve the following in 15 months:

  • 400+ curated experiences and a community of 600+ members
  • Collaborations with 2 major OTAs (in talks with MMT, Yatra, OYO already)
  • Experiences in Rajasthan, Maharashtra & Goa, Himalayan region, Punjab
  • This will get them in a strong position to raise follow-on capital to scale

By end of 2019, ToRoots plans to have 1000+ travel experiences and achieve gross revenues of Rs.6-7cr.

This will also help build the foundation for scale with a robust tech platform and processes to support the growth.
